Beaver-Scouts
are the youngest members of the worldwide Scouting movement. The
colony accepts both boys and girls. Children may join within the three
months leading up to their 6th birthday. When they reach 8 they move
up to Cubs.
What do Beaver-Scouts do?
Each night has a theme with all activities linked to that particular
theme. We aim to create a broad and balanced programme, in order to
ensure that our activities cater for the varying needs and interests of
the children within our colony. Some examples of what we do include;
active games, team games, crafts, acting, singing, learning about new
things, visiting new places and trying new activities. We also do work towards Beaver-Scout badges, which once achieved can be sewn on our uniforms. Please see the badges page to find out more about the wide range of badges that can be achieved.
A night may follow the following structure dependent on the theme and how active the children are feeling!
6.00-6.15: Children arrive: Choice of Football / Drawing/ Wordsearches /Crosswords
6.15-6.30: Opening ceremony / Register and Chat time. Sharing news.
6.30 – 6.45: Active games
6.45 – 7.00: Quiet games or craft activity
7.00 – 7.10: Children choose game for group to play
7.10 – 7.15: Prayer and closing ceremony. ‘Star’ of the night chosen to take shield home.
When and where do you meet?
Our groups meet all around Ilford, Barkingside, Hainault and Newbury Park. Please click on the Groups page to find the group nearest to you. Most groups meet early evening time however one group meets on a Sunday afternoon!
Do I have to pay anything?
You will pay Subs which is the money that goes towards buying new equipment for the colony, refreshments that the children receive each week and the rent of the church hall and any associated bills. This varies with group but is generally between 20-30 pounds per term. Please remember that all of the leaders are volunteers so do not receive any of this money.
Do you go on any visits?
Children have the opportunity to visit activity centres including
Hargreaves, Chigwell Row and Mallinsons; where they can try new
activities such as wall climbing, go-karting, assault course, scavenger
hunt and trampolining. Each year a sleepover is held for Beavers to
experience their first night away from home. We hold an annual Easter
egg hunt, activity days and visits to places of interest such as
Colchester Zoo and Bethnal Green toy museum as well as the annual
pantomime held at the Kenneth More theatre. We also hold regular visits to Claybury forest where children have a chance to build dens, take part in scavenger hunts and a range of outdoor games. These events are often
extremely popular and provide children with a range of new opportunities and experiences.
Do Beaver-Scouts take part in any competitions?
Beavers have the opportunity to take part in many competitions throughout the year against other colonies. Competitions include a swimming gala, bowling, general knowledge quiz and Connect Four.
